Steam-distilled in Spain from the flowering tops of Lavandula latifolia (also historically documented as Lavandula spica), Zurma’s Lavender Spike Essential Oil is a potent, respiratory-focused botanical extract. Growing at lower altitudes than true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), this robust Mediterranean species yields a clear to pale yellow mobile liquid with a brisk, penetrating, camphoraceous (sharp and medicinal), and distinctly herbaceous aroma that bridges the scent profiles of lavender and eucalyptus.

Chemically, Lavandula latifolia differs significantly from true floral lavenders. While it retains a strong concentration of linalool (a naturally occurring terpene alcohol), it contains negligible esters and instead features high levels of 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol—an oxide known for clearing the airways) and camphor (a stimulating ketone). Within clinical aromatherapy and topical formulation, Lavender Spike functions as an invigorating respiratory aid and a warming rubefacient (a substance that increases local blood circulation when applied to the skin) rather than a sedative floral oil.

Skincare Ritual & Well-being Applications: The oxide- and ketone-rich composition of Lavandula latifolia essential oil is extensively documented in clinical aromatherapy literature for its expectorant (mucus-clearing) and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties [1, 2]. When diffused or inhaled via steam during seasonal winter chills, the high concentration of 1,8-cineole assists in clearing nasal passages, supporting comfortable breathing, and sharpening mental alertness [1]. In topical body care, diluted Lavender Spike essential oil is widely utilised in pre- and post-exertion sports massage blends to warm stiff joints and soothe fatigued muscles [2]. In targeted cosmetic formulations, its natural purifying properties make it a functional addition to clarifying washes and spot treatments for blemish-prone skin, as well as soothing balms for minor insect bites. For an aromatic bath, blend 3–5 drops into a suitable solubiliser (a substance that disperses oil evenly in water) prior to adding to warm water to prevent undiluted essential oil from contacting the skin directly.

Dermal Limits & Clinical Safety:
Lavandula latifolia essential oil is non-toxic and non-phototoxic (does not cause sun sensitivity). For standard topical applications, a dilution of 1% to 2% in a fixed carrier oil or emulsion base is recommended for general body care, and up to 3% to 5% for localised muscular massage. Because of its significant 1,8-cineole and camphor content, this essential oil can cause central nervous system and breathing issues in young children; do not apply to or near the face of infants or children under ten years of age, and exercise caution during pregnancy [3].

Storage & Degradation:
Because linalool and monoterpenes are susceptible to autoxidation (chemical breakdown when exposed to air) over time—forming peroxides that can increase the risk of dermal sensitisation (allergic skin reactions)—containers must be kept tightly sealed [3]. Store in a cool, dark environment away from direct UV light and heat. When stored correctly, Lavender Spike essential oil maintains optimal stability for 24 to 36 months.

Critical Warnings:
For external cosmetic and aromatic use only. Do not ingest under any circumstances. Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use on the same burn or sensitive skin applications where true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is indicated, as the high camphor content may cause local irritation. Perform a standard 24-hour patch test prior to regular topical use.

Zurma Essential Oils – Highest Quality Pure and Natural

At Zurma we go to great lengths to ensure that we only sell the highest quality pure and natural essential oils. We have searched the world for the best essential oils. Our in-house quality control system ensures that this high standard is maintained for all our essential oils. Every essential oil comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) test to confirm that they are genuine and authentic essential oils containing their correct active constituents.

The only exception to this is with the New Zealand small scale essential oil producers we buy direct from e.g., Lavender, Mānuka, Kānuka, Tea Tree etc. This is because we know and trust these growers who distil their own essential oils.

Finally, all essential oils have to undergo our own in-house smell, appearance and feel test and if they are not up to our high standards, we simply send the product back to the supplier. Based on this quality control process we believe that the 100% Pure and Natural essential oils that Zurma supplies to our customers are of the highest quality and are excellent for use in aromatherapy.
