German Chamomile CO₂ Extract – Matricaria chamomilla
Extraction Method: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction
Plant Part: Flowers
Country of Origin: Germany
Class: Sesquiterpenol
Perfumery Note: Middle

German Chamomile CO₂ extracted oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory that is mainly used in topical applications for its analgesic effects. This CO₂ has greater anti-inflammatory properties than steam distilled Roman and German Chamomiles due to it containing a higher percentage of Matricin (approximately 1–3%) which has very effective anti-inflammatory properties. The CO₂ extract also features an aroma that many prefer to that of the steam distilled essential oil. The CO₂ distillation of German Chamomile contains all the properties of German Chamomile Essential Oil. However, German Chamomile CO₂ is one of the only sources of the very important anti-inflammatory component Matricin, which has significantly stronger anti-inflammatory properties than the Chamazulene typically found in Roman and German steam distilled essential oils.

How Chamomile CO₂ Extract is Different from Chamomile Essential Oil
CO₂ Extract captures both volatile oils (e.g. bisabolol, farnesene) and non-volatile compounds (e.g. matricin, spathulenol, oxides), making it broader spectrum than steam-distilled essential oil. Contains a minimum of 6% alpha-bisabolol and 0.5% matricin (measured as chamazulene after heat conversion). Offers stronger anti-inflammatory effects and deeper skin-calming action due to its full-spectrum profile. Has a soft green-brown colour and a more herbaceous scent compared to the sweet apple-like note of blue chamomile essential oil.

Aroma
More herbaceous, and “truer” to the scent of the flower.
