Oil-Based Perfume Recipes: Simple Blends to Try at Home

Oil-Based Perfume Recipes: Simple Blends to Try at Home

Creating your own oil-based perfumes is a beautiful way to connect with the unique character of essential oils — and a great alternative to alcohol-based perfumes, especially for those with sensitive skin. These blends are gentle, long-lasting, and easy to customise.

We recommend using Fractionated Coconut Oil (FC) as your base. It’s light, non-greasy, and doesn’t have a strong scent of its own — ideal for letting your chosen aroma shine through. Jojoba Oil is another great option, especially if you prefer something a bit more skin-nourishing.

All recipes below are designed for a 10ml roller bottle or perfume vial.

🌺 Recipe 6: Tropical Dream

  • 4 drops Amyris

  • 4 drops Ylang Ylang (Grade 3)

  • 2 drops Frangipani 5% in FC

  • 2 drops Palmarosa

  • 1 drop Petitgrain Orange

  • 10ml Carrier Oil (FC or Jojoba)

Vibe: Exotic, soft, and summery – like golden hour in a tropical garden.

How to Blend:

  1. Add essential oils to a clean 10ml glass roller bottle or dropper bottle.

  2. Top up with carrier oil (Fractionated Coconut or Jojoba).

  3. Shake gently to combine.

  4. Let the perfume rest for at least a few hours (ideally overnight) so the scent can settle.

  5. Apply to pulse points – wrists, neck, or behind ears.

Final Tips

  • Always patch test before using a new blend on your skin.

  • Store your perfume in a cool, dark place to keep it fresh.

  • Keep a wee notebook of what you like or don’t like – it helps heaps when you're experimenting.

Oil-based perfumes are subtle, intimate, and evolve beautifully over time. Give them a go – and don’t be afraid to tweak the recipes to suit your style. Kia pai tō rā!
