Cultivated, harvested, and steam-distilled on the Canterbury Plains of New Zealand from the flowering tops of the Lavandula angustifolia 'Avice Hill' cultivar (a rare, selectively bred plant variety named after the pioneering Christchurch herbalist Avice Hill), Zurma’s Lavender Avice Hill Essential Oil is a specialized, locally produced botanical extract. It presents as a clear to pale yellow mobile liquid with a soft, sweet, and rounded floral aroma with virtually no camphoraceous (sharp, medicinal, or mothball-like) undertones.

Chemically, this specific New Zealand cultivar is distinguished by its naturally high concentration of linalyl acetate (a calming aromatic ester) alongside a remarkably low level of linalool (typically 11% to 17%, compared to 25% to 45% in standard Lavandula angustifolia oils). Because linalool is a regulated fragrance constituent prone to oxidising and triggering dermal reactions, this unique chemical profile makes the 'Avice Hill' cultivar a premier low-allergen option for sensitive skin formulations, clinical aromatherapy, and fine natural perfumery.

Skincare Ritual & Well-being Applications: The unique ester-rich, low-linalool composition of Lavandula angustifolia 'Avice Hill' essential oil is documented in clinical aromatherapy literature for its gentle effects on both the central nervous system and reactive skin types [1]. When diffused into the environment, the high percentage of linalyl acetate acts as an effective nervine (an agent that calms and supports the nervous system), helping to ease physiological stress responses, reduce restlessness, and support healthy sleep architecture without overstimulation [1, 2]. In topical cosmetic formulations, its reduced allergen profile combined with mild anti-inflammatory and skin-repairing and wound-healing properties makes it well-suited for facial serums, barrier creams, and soothing body lotions designed to calm redness or sensitive skin [2]. For an aromatic bath, blend 3–5 drops into a suitable solubiliser (a substance that disperses oil evenly in water) or fixed carrier oil prior to adding to warm water to prevent undiluted essential oil from contacting the skin directly.

Formulation & Safety Guidelines:
Application: Designed for sensitive-skin cosmetic formulation, fine natural perfumery, ambient diffusion, and targeted dermal care when correctly diluted.

Dermal Limits & Clinical Safety:
According to International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards, Lavandula angustifolia is unrestricted for dermal use. Due to its naturally reduced linalool content, the 'Avice Hill' cultivar lowers the risk of contact dermatitis (allergic or irritant skin inflammation) in sensitive individuals; however, adhering to standard clinical guidelines, a cosmetic dilution of 1% to 2% in a suitable carrier oil or emulsion base is recommended for facial applications, and up to 3% to 5% for body massage [3].

Storage & Degradation:
Although this cultivar contains significantly less linalool than standard lavender oils, its terpene and ester constituents remain susceptible to autoxidation (chemical breakdown when exposed to air) over time, which can form sensitising peroxides [3]. Ensure the bottle is kept tightly sealed and store in a cool, dark environment away from direct UV light and heat. When stored correctly, this essential oil maintains optimal stability for 24 to 36 months.

Critical Warnings:
For external cosmetic and aromatic use only. Do not ingest under any circumstances. Do not apply undiluted directly to the skin. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or managing specific medical conditions, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner prior to regular application. Perform a standard 24-hour patch test prior to initial topical use.

Zurma Essential Oils – Highest Quality Pure and Natural
At Zurma we go to great lengths to ensure that we only sell the highest quality pure and natural essential oils. We have searched the world for the best essential oils. Our in-house quality control system ensures that this high standard is maintained for all our essential oils. Every essential oil comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) test to confirm that they are genuine and authentic essential oils containing their correct active constituents.

The only exception to this is with the New Zealand small scale essential oil producers we buy direct from e.g., Lavender, Mānuka, Kānuka, Tea Tree etc. This is because we know and trust these growers who distil their own essential oils.

Finally, all essential oils have to undergo our own in-house smell, appearance and feel test and if they are not up to our high standards, we simply send the product back to the supplier. Based on this quality control process we believe that the 100% Pure and Natural essential oils that Zurma supplies to our customers are of the highest quality and are excellent for use in aromatherapy.
