DIY Magnesium Sprays – Relaxation, Relief & Skin Support in a Bottle

Magnesium plays a vital role in calming the nervous system, easing sore muscles, and supporting healthy sleep. Applying it through the skin (transdermally) is one of the most effective and gentle ways to top up your levels without tablets or powders. With just a few ingredients—like Zurma’s Natural Magnesium Chloride Flakes or Epsom Salt, plus distilled water or one of our soothing hydrosols—you can create your own magnesium sprays to support your wellbeing from the outside in.

1. Basic Magnesium Oil Spray (with Magnesium Chloride)

Best for: Muscle cramps, stress, sleep, hormonal support

Ingredients (makes ~100 ml)
3 tablespoons Zurma Natural Magnesium Chloride Flakes
100 ml distilled water or a calming hydrosol like lavender or rose (all available at zurma.co.nz)
Optional: 5 drops lavender or Roman chamomile essential oil
Optional: 5 drops frankincense or geranium essential oil (for nervous system or hormonal support)

How to Make
Warm your water or hydrosol slightly and dissolve the magnesium flakes fully. Let cool, then add essential oils if using. Pour into a spray bottle and shake before use.

How to Use
Spray onto arms, legs, stomach, or feet. Let absorb for at least 20 minutes before rinsing, or leave on. Avoid broken or freshly shaved skin.

Frequency
Use once daily or as needed—especially in the evening, post-workout, or during times of stress.

2. Cooling Magnesium Mist (with Epsom Salt)

Best for: Post-exercise relief, tired feet and legs, warm weather use

Ingredients (makes ~100 ml)
2 tablespoons Zurma Natural Epsom Salt
100 ml distilled water or a refreshing hydrosol such as peppermint, or manuka
Optional: 4 drops peppermint essential oil
Optional: 3 drops eucalyptus or rosemary essential oil

How to Make
Dissolve Epsom salt into warm distilled water or hydrosol. Let cool completely, then add your essential oils and pour into a spray bottle.

How to Use
Spray onto legs, feet, or back of the neck after physical activity or a long day on your feet.

Frequency
Use up to twice a day as needed for cooling, energising relief.

3. Magnesium Sleep Spray

Best for: Evening wind-down, nervous tension, and sleep support

Ingredients (makes ~100 ml)
3 tablespoons Zurma Natural Magnesium Chloride Flakes
100 ml distilled water or lavender or rose hydrosol
5 drops lavender essential oil
3 drops vetiver or sandalwood essential oil
1 tsp vodka or witch hazel (optional – helps disperse oils)

How to Make
Dissolve flakes in warm water or hydrosol, let cool, then add essential oils and dispersant if using. Shake gently before each use.

How to Use
Spray on feet, back of neck, or belly before bed. Massage in or leave to absorb.

Frequency
Nightly, or any time you're looking to relax before sleep.

Why Use Hydrosols Instead of Water?

Hydrosols (floral waters) are a gentle way to enhance your magnesium spray. They bring their own skin-calming and aromatherapeutic properties to the mix. At Zurma, we offer a wide range of organic hydrosols that can elevate your formula:

Lavender Hydrosol – ideal for calming and bedtime use

Peppermint Hydrosol – cooling and energising

Rose Hydrosol – hydrating and emotionally uplifting

Manuka Hydrosol – gentle yet purifying for skin

You can explore these options at zurma.co.nz.

Benefits of Magnesium Sprays

Calms the nervous system during times of stress or overwhelm

Supports restful sleep and hormonal balance

Improves skin softness, hydration, and elasticity

Soothes tired legs and feet at the end of the day

Cautions and Usage Tips

A tingling or stinging sensation is normal, especially if magnesium levels are low or skin is dry. You can dilute the spray more if needed.

Avoid broken, irritated, or freshly shaved skin.

Always do a patch test first, particularly if you have sensitive skin or are using essential oils.

Store in a cool, dark place and use within 1–2 months—especially if you're using hydrosols instead of distilled water.
