Why Use Nut and Seed Oils for the Face and Body?
Share
Plant-based oils have been used for centuries to nourish, cleanse, and protect the skin. Among the most versatile are nut and seed oils—rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and skin-compatible lipids. Whether used for facial cleansing, makeup removal, or full-body moisturising, these oils offer a gentle, effective alternative to synthetic skincare ingredients.
When used as a cleanser, oils work on the principle of “like dissolves like.” They bind to excess sebum, dirt, sunscreen, and makeup without stripping the skin's protective barrier. Lighter oils such as jojoba (technically a wax ester but structurally similar to human sebum) and grapeseed are ideal for this purpose, offering deep cleansing while leaving the skin soft and balanced. For those with dry or mature skin, a slightly richer oil like camellia seed or apricot kernel can provide extra nourishment during the cleanse. The oil cleansing method has become popular in recent years, not only for its effectiveness, but also because it respects the skin’s microbiome and acid mantle.
Nut and seed oils also shine as natural makeup removers. Unlike conventional removers that often rely on alcohols or synthetic surfactants (cleansing agents that lower the surface tension between substances, allowing oil, dirt, and water to mix so they can be rinsed away), oils lift makeup gently without causing dryness or irritation. Jojoba and grapeseed oils are especially good for oily or acne-prone skin, as they are non-comedogenic (a substance that is unlikely to clog pores or cause blackheads and acne) and high in linoleic acid. Sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, and camellia seed oil are more suited to dry, sensitive, or mature skin types, providing emollience while effortlessly removing foundation, mascara, and lipstick—even long-wear or waterproof formulas. To use, simply apply a small amount of oil to dry skin, massage gently to loosen makeup, and wipe away with a warm, damp cloth or cotton pad.
As body moisturisers, nut and seed oils offer immediate softness and long-term skin barrier support. Oils like almond, macadamia, or sunflower seed are high in oleic acid, which softens and conditions rough, dry skin. For more inflamed, acne-prone, or sensitive skin types, oils richer in linoleic acid—such as hemp seed, evening primrose, or black cumin seed oil—may be more suitable, helping to calm and repair without congestion. Applying oils to slightly damp skin after bathing enhances absorption and helps trap moisture, making them a simple and effective replacement for conventional body lotions.
In addition to their lipid profiles, nut and seed oils are naturally rich in bioactive compounds. Many contain vitamin E, beta-carotene, phytosterols, and polyphenols—components that support wound healing, reduce oxidative stress, and maintain skin elasticity. Because they are whole, unrefined ingredients, they tend to work in harmony with skin physiology, offering a safe and biodegradable option for daily care.
