Magnesium Sulphate vs Magnesium Chloride: What’s the Difference in Bath Salts?
Share
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of bodily functions, from regulating muscle and nerve activity to supporting energy production and stress response. One of the most accessible and relaxing ways to support magnesium levels is through bath salts—absorbed transdermally via the skin. At Zurma, we offer two types: Magnesium Chloride Flakes and Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulphate). While both offer benefits, they differ in composition, absorption, and therapeutic use.
Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salt)
Commonly known as Epsom salt, magnesium sulphate is a naturally occurring compound of magnesium, sulphur, and oxygen. It's well-known for its ability to relax sore muscles, ease cramps, and reduce inflammation. The sulphate component may also support detoxification pathways and joint health. It’s ideal for post-exercise recovery or relieving tension after a long day. However, magnesium sulphate is eliminated more quickly by the body and offers more short-term relief compared to magnesium chloride.
Magnesium Chloride Flakes
Magnesium chloride is a highly bioavailable form of magnesium, with a smaller molecular size that allows for more effective absorption through the skin. This makes it a great choice for long-term replenishment of magnesium stores. It’s gentler on the skin than Epsom salts and particularly beneficial for chronic stress, poor sleep, muscle tightness, and even dry or sensitive skin. Regular use can contribute to systemic magnesium balance and nervous system support.
How to Use Magnesium Bath Salts
Epsom salt baths: Add 1–2 cups to a warm bath and soak for 20–30 minutes. Great for occasional relief, especially after physical exertion or during acute muscle tension.
Magnesium chloride baths: Add 1–2 cups of magnesium chloride flakes to a warm bath, or use a half cup in a foot soak. Best used regularly—2 to 4 times a week—for ongoing stress, sleep, and skin support.
Avoid very hot water, as it can limit absorption and dry the skin. After soaking, pat dry and moisturise to lock in hydration. Drink a glass of water post-bath to support the body’s natural mineral balance.
Whether you’re looking for short-term muscular relief or deeper relaxation and mineral replenishment, Zurma’s natural Epsom salt and magnesium chloride flakes are clean, effective options to incorporate into your wellness routine.
