Make Your Own: Soothing Period Cramp Oil or Balm

Make Your Own: Soothing Period Cramp Oil or Balm

For many, menstruation is a regular part of life—sometimes a quiet background rhythm, other times a source of intense discomfort. Cramping, bloating, lower back pain, and general unease are common. But for some, period pain goes beyond the ordinary.

Conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, or simply higher sensitivity to prostaglandins (the compounds that trigger uterine contractions) can lead to stronger, more persistent cramps. This means that not everyone’s experience of menstruation is the same, and for many, a gentle, natural support tool—like a topical oil or balm—can make a real difference.

Here’s how you can make your own Soothing Period Cramp Oil or Balm using ingredients from the Zurma collection.

Why Use a Cramp Oil or Balm?

Topical application of essential oils—especially when massaged over the lower belly or back—offers a double benefit:
-physical (anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, muscle-relaxing)
-and emotional (calming, grounding, easing overwhelm).

Essential oils like Clary Sage, Lavender, and Sweet Marjoram have traditionally been used to support uterine health and relieve muscle tension. Combined with nourishing nut and seed oils, or in a balm base, they offer a simple, plant-based way to care for your body when you need it most.

Recipe 1: Soothing Cramp Oil Blend

Ingredients:

30ml Sweet Almond Oil (or Jojoba Oil for very sensitive skin)

5 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil

4 drops Lavender Essential Oil

3 drops Sweet Marjoram Essential Oil

Optional: 2 drops Ginger Essential Oil for warmth and circulation

Instructions:

Combine oils in a 30ml glass bottle or roller.

Shake gently before each use.

Apply to the lower abdomen or back, massaging in circular, comforting motions.

Recipe 2: Period Comfort Balm

Ingredients:

15g Shea Butter

10ml Apricot Kernel Oil

10ml Sunflower Oil

5 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil

3 drops Lavender Essential Oil

3 drops Sweet Marjoram Essential Oil

Optional: 2 drops Copaiba or Frankincense for grounding and inflammation support

Instructions:

Melt the shea butter and oils together using a double boiler or hot water bath.

Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the essential oils.

Pour into a clean jar or balm tin and allow to set.

Massage onto areas of discomfort as needed.

Why These Ingredients?

Clary Sage is known for helping reduce cramping by supporting hormonal balance and relaxing smooth muscle.
Sweet Marjoram soothes muscle spasms and eases tension in the body.
Lavender offers anti-inflammatory and analgesic benefits, while also calming the nervous system.
Ginger brings warmth and may improve circulation to the area, ideal for deep, heavy sensations.
Copaiba and Frankincense provide gentle anti-inflammatory support.

Your carrier oils from Zurma’s Nut & Seed range allow for safe, effective topical use, while butters like Shea offer richness and longer-lasting moisture.
