Allspice essential oil (also known as Pimento Berry essential oil) has a sweet, spicy, clove-like odor with a fresh and clean top note and a long-lasting, sweet, balsamic-spicy body note with hints of tea-like undertones. The name Allspice originates from the likening of the odor to a mixture of nutmeg, clove and cinnamon. It blends well with Sweet Orange and Bergamot.

Botanical Name: Pimenta dioica
Part Typically Used: Fruit/Berry
Method of Extraction: Steam Distillation

Typical Main Constituents
Eugenol - 64%
Methyl eugenol - 20%
beta-Caryophyllene - 5%
Myrcene - 2%
1,8-Cineole - 2%
alpha-Humulene - 1%

The evergreen tree Allspice essential oil is derived from yields a beautiful essential oil produced by water or steam distillation of the crushed berries using the cohobation technique (distillate water is continuously recycled giving rise to higher degree of saturation of the water to maximize oil yield). Because of the high eugenol content Allspice oil is one of a handful of essential oils with a density slightly greater than water.

Allspice essential oil is typically used as a modifier in men’s fragrances, particularly in spicy fougeres and in oriental types.

Safety Information
Studies indicate that Allspice essential oil can act as a mucous membrane irritant if it is used at full strength in a diffuser so it is best diluted with other complimentary oils like Sweet Orange and Bergamot. Tisserand and Young recommend a dermal maximum of 0.15%. They indicate that it may interfere with blood clotting. Reading Tisserand and Young's full profile is recommended. Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, Essential Oil Safety (Second Edition. United Kingdom: Churchill Livingstone Elsevier, 2014). Because this essential oil poses a higher risk of causing irritation and sensitization it is recommended that it be avoided in the bath, even if it is diluted.
